Why Most People Are Using Claude AI Wrong (And How to Fix It)

Posted on the Berg Codex Blog

If you've spent any time with Claude or ChatGPT, you've probably had this experience: you ask a question, you get an answer, and it's... fine. Not wrong, not bad — just generic enough that you end up rewriting half of it yourself.

Most people assume that's just how AI works. A little inconsistent. Occasionally brilliant, mostly a coin flip.

It's not. It's a design gap — and once you see it, you can't unsee it.

The difference between a task and an identity

Here's the entire idea, stripped down as simply as we can put it:

A task tells the model what to do once. An identity tells it who to be every time.

"Write me a blog post about our new feature" is a task. You'll get a blog post. It might be fine. It might be forgettable. Either way, you're starting from zero the next time you ask.

But something like — "You are the senior content strategist for a productivity software company. Your readers are overworked managers. You never open with a question, and every post ends with one concrete action the reader can take today" — that's not a task. That's a standing role. And it produces something noticeably different: consistency, every single time you use it.

This is the entire idea behind what people are now calling "AI agents." Not robots. Not some autonomous system running wild in your business. Just a well-specified role, with clear rules, a repeatable process, and a way to check its own work — handed to a model capable enough to actually hold it.

Why this matters more than another list of "prompt hacks"

Most AI content out there teaches you prompts — copy this phrase, add this word, try this trick. That helps at the margins. But it's the equivalent of teaching someone a few good sentences instead of teaching them how to write.

The people and businesses getting real, compounding value out of Claude aren't doing clever one-off prompting. They're doing something closer to systems design:

  • Defining exactly who an agent is and what outcome it's responsible for
  • Writing down the rules a new employee would need on day one — the stuff that's "obvious" to you but invisible to an AI unless you say it
  • Mapping the actual steps a process takes, including what happens when something doesn't go as planned
  • Building in a self-check step so the agent catches its own mistakes before you ever see them
  • Connecting multiple agents together, so one's output becomes another's input

None of it requires code. It requires the same thing that separates a well-run team from a chaotic one: clarity about how work actually gets done.

A small example

A solo strategy consultant we know was spending roughly twenty hours a week on three things: drafting proposals, synthesizing research, and writing LinkedIn content — exactly the kind of work that feels impossible to hand off, because it requires judgment.

The fix wasn't a generic AI tool. It was three narrow, well-defined agents — each with an explicit identity, explicit rules (never quote a price without sign-off, never state a fact without a source), a mapped workflow, and a way to check its own output before handing it back.

Twenty hours a week became roughly six. Not because the AI got smarter. Because the design got deliberate.

We put the whole system into one guide

Everything above — the mental models, the step-by-step build process, a debugging method for when an agent doesn't behave, and a full library of 100 ready-to-adapt agent templates spanning marketing, sales, customer support, finance, HR, and more — is now available as our newest release:

📘 Build Your AI Agent Inside Claude — The Complete Blueprint

It's not a list of prompts. It's the actual architecture behind agents that hold up across hundreds of real tasks instead of falling apart the moment something unusual comes in. You'll build three complete agents from scratch, learn a five-question method for turning any messy business process into something an AI can reliably execute, and get a full library of 100 done-for-you templates to deploy immediately.

No coding. No technical background required.
